How Does the 48-Team World Cup Format Work?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup brings the biggest format change in tournament history: the field grew from 32 to 48 teams, the match count jumped from 64 to 104, and a brand-new knockout round — the Round of 32 — joined the bracket. Hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada, it is also the first World Cup with three host nations.
Below we answer the most common questions about the new format. For how the knockout stage works, see our knockout bracket guide; for the day-by-day schedule, see the matches page.
01 How are the groups organised?
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four (A through L). Each team plays 3 group matches; a win is worth 3 points, a draw 1. With 12 groups instead of the old 8, the group stage alone contains 72 matches.
02 How many teams advance from each group?
The top two in every group advance directly — that's 24 teams. The remaining 8 spots go to the best third-placed teams across the 12 groups, ranked by points and goal difference. That makes 32 teams in the knockout stage.
03 How are the best third-placed teams decided?
Third-placed teams are ranked against each other by points, then goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record and, as a last resort, drawing of lots. The system keeps final group games alive to the very end — even a three-point third can survive.
04 How many matches are there in total, and how long does the tournament run?
104 matches in total: 72 group games, 16 in the Round of 32, 8 in the Round of 16, 4 quarter-finals, 2 semi-finals, the third-place match and the final. The tournament kicked off on 11 June; the final is on 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
05 Which countries and stadiums host the matches?
Matches are played in 16 stadiums across three countries: 11 in the United States, 3 in Mexico and 2 in Canada. Mexico City's historic Estadio Azteca hosted the opening match; the bulk of the knockout rounds is in US stadiums.
06 How many matches will the champion have played?
A team that reaches the final plays 8 matches: 3 group games plus the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final. That's one more than under the old format — making squad depth more important than ever.
