The World Cup's top scorer chart is the unofficial standing behind the adidas Golden Boot, awarded to the player who scores the most goals across the tournament. Ties are broken first by assists, then by fewer minutes played — so efficiency is rewarded, not just volume.

With the new 48-team format the group stage alone runs to 72 matches, which gives strikers more runway than in any previous edition: a player who reaches the final can now play up to 8 matches. That puts historic marks under real pressure — the single-tournament record is still Just Fontaine's 13 goals from 1958.

The table above updates automatically as matches are played. The penalties column shows how many of a player's goals came from the spot; read together with assists it gives a fuller picture of a player's overall attacking contribution.
